I hope your neighbour is ok with this??

If we're talking a laptop with a built in network adaptor then it's too easy. Just find out the name of the wireless network, which the laptop should auto-detect, and then enter your neighbours password, assuming they have their network password protected.

If it's a PC then you would need a wireless network card installed. Either PCI or USB, though PCI is far more reliable in my opinion. It should detect their wireless signal the same as the laptop would now. Just click on the network and enter the password.

I highly recommend you OK this with your neighbour first, as you could get in trouble if you're pirating their connection. It's not hard to figure out when their connection slows down to a trickle and they call their ISP asking "why so slow".

I hope this helps.

Hey John,

Welcome to PC101!

Yeah... as RnR suggests... I'd check with your neighbor first (maybe y'all can split the cost) before you start to feed into their internet access. I mean, there's a reason why it's "secure." One, so people don't steal their personal data and two so people don't piggyback off their service.

Hi Larry,

Welcome to PC101.

You've come to the right place. We look forward to your input and questions, if you have any. The people here are friendly and willing to help.

I'm an old fart too. The closest thing to a computer when I went to school was an old abacus my math teacher had. I was excited when I got my first calculator. LOL

Howdy Larry!! Welcome to PC101.

Grand Dad of six... phew!! I bet they keep ya busy!!

You're right, the computer world has change... but then again it changes all the time. There's always some new piece of hardware or software that comes out, so we're all learning something new each day!

Is there something in particular you wanted get a handle on... something in particular you were interested in learning about?

Take care!

Something? Hmmmmmmm....... Lets see. Just trying to figure out how I make it all work. I had a PC for the last 10 years but it crashed and I lost most of my files and folders, Thank God I had all my Bible studies backed up, those were the most important to me and still are. I have been trying to get win2k to load but each time I load it I keep getting errors on the pages each time I open on the net?????????????? So today I had a friend in stall two harddrives, One primary and one slave and then I took it to our local pc store to have it all checked out and also win xp installed with avg. Hope this works.

Yes, back up is very important, as you already know. Please feel free to ask questions here next time you want to install an OS. I have lots of experience with installing Win2k and XP, as well as many of our other members do. You probably needed drivers after your installation. Google is another way of solving problems, from installing an OS to repairing a leaky fawcett. I love Google for that, but you still have to weed out the good advice from the bad.

Please keep us updated.

No worries, friend. OS is short for operating system, like Win2k, XP, Vista...though Vista hardly qualifies.

Not a dumb question! I'm sure we've all asked "What's an OS?" at some point! I know did!

Another question, Where and how do I start a new thread on here. I have questions but not sure how or where to post them. Please advise.

In the mean time I need to know what I am doing wrong with a pc I am trying to get to work for my grdsons to play their games on. Its an old Gateway ,1996, 450mh with 13gb ram. I installed the harddrive and a used disc thing. It will open to the bios screen (I think thats what it is called, the screen tells me how much ram and mh the pc has) and that is about as far as it will go. What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it to open so they can play with it?????
Thanks in advance and God bless.

Howdy Larry!

Just hit this button at the top right of the web page...

....and that will take you to the main page (or top page) of the forum. From there you just scroll down a bit and see where you think your question best fits. Is it a Microsoft Windows issues? Possibly a hardware problem? Or maybe it's some other type of software problem.

Once you decide where you'd like to place the question just click on that forum's link. So, if it's a Hardware problem you'd just click on the word Hardware. The word has a link on it which will take you to the Hardware forum.

You'll notice some "Sub-Forums" under some primary Forums. Like under Hardware you'll see Tech Product Reviews & Gadgets and Gizmos. This is just a way to break out some of the threads into even more specific areas.

Once you've chosen your Forum and click on its name, you only need to hit the button to go town on your own thread!!

I thought i'd bump this thread up, so our new members see where to introduce themselves.

Welcome to all new forum members

We'd like to know a bit about yourself, if you don't mind sharing.

We are a friendly lot here, so also please feel free to ask any questions.
